Black Rock’

Oil and Palette Knife Technique on Canvas
Moving back across the pond in 2019 was less
“home sweet home”
and more
“where did I put my nervous
system
?”
After
13 years in Florida, our return to Melbourne came with jet lag, emotional whiplash, and the mild identity crisis that only a big move can deliver.
My remedy was simple: walk. Preferably along the bay. Preferably toward the rather show-
offy
rock formation at Half Moon Bay in Black Rock, which insists on changing colour daily depending on the light, the weather, and (
I’m
convinced) its mood. Some days it whispered calm. Other days it dramatically demanded attention. I understood it completely.
‘Black Rock’
is one of my first landscapes created using a palette knife on canvas – a technique that felt appropriately blunt, physical, and slightly therapeutic. Less fussing, more scraping. Less overthinking, more “just get it down.” Much like the move itself, really.
This painting is a small love letter to place, recovery, and the quiet power of a good walk when everything feels a bit upside down.
